When the majority of people hear about new Zealand they tend to think of a more extreme version of Wales with rolling hills, mountains, countryside and rivers. Most of this is actually true but the reality and contrast that the land has to offer is a little more extreme than many people are aware of.

Take the northern island for example; a town called Rotorua looks like it has come straight from a Star Wars movie scene with bubbling lakes of sulphur, mud pools and geysers lying in and around the town centre. It is a spectacular geothermal wonderland which sits on a volcanic plateau and is a must see for any visitors passing through.

The very north of the same island which appears very British in terms of the green countryside actually has a group of islands near the tip known as the ?Bay of Islands? which resemble a tropical beach paradise featuring clear blue waters and light sand. It is sometimes hard to believe there are snow-capped mountains and glaciers in the country?s South Island at the same time. These mountains have become famous in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and provide the opportunity to offer visitors breathtaking glacier climbing experiences with fantastic high views over the landscape on glaciers such as the Franz Josef Glacier. So you can get sunburnt at the beach in one part of the small country while somebody else is skiing and climbing ice in another part.

Milford Sound in the South Island offers a serene and tranquil boat trips along the crystal clear lakes which are surrounded by great hills and mountains and most people believe it is one of the most peaceful, pure, untouched places the country has to offer while just 40 miles away lies Queenstown which is famed for being the party capital of the South Island and the extreme sports capital of the world boasting multiple bungy jumps, skydiving, canyon swings, white water rafting and much more.

It is clear to see why so many tourists book holidays to this country which also offers great local, cultural Maori experiences. You can enjoy frequent escorted tours to New Zealand, and it is easier than ever to visit this beautiful country of contrast.

“Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve.”

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Nature Consortium is hosting a Weekend of Service with two opportunities to volunteer in Seattle?s largest remaining forest, the West Duwamish Greenbelt. The events commemorate Dr. King?s life and legacy as the father of environmental justice. On Saturday, January 14 and Monday, January 16, volunteers can spend ?a day on, not a day off? as part of an ongoing effort to restore the forest to a healthy state.

It?s no small matter that the largest forest in Seattle happens to sit next to the city?s only river and one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Extending over 500 acres in West Seattle, the West Duwamish Greenbelt plays a critical role in filtering the air and water pollution in the Duwamish River created by urban runoff and industrial waste.

Nationwide, minority communities are disproportionately affected by pollution, and Seattle is no exception. The Duwamish River is a superfund site impacting thousands of citizens in South Seattle, many of whom are people of color. Nature Consortium?s work in the West Duwamish Greenbelt will help aid the restoration of the watershed, creating a healthier and safer environment for South Seattle and allowing more equal access to its natural resources.

Saturday?s work party will be held in an area of the greenbelt known as the ?Soundway? site, 32 acres of land originally slated for development by the City of Seattle. Community members including Nature Consortium banded together in 2004 to save the property from development and preserve it as urban green space.

Volunteers will roll up their sleeves to remove invasive species from the forest, install weed barriers, and plant native trees and shrubs. In the spirit of Nature Consortium?s mission to ?connect people, arts, and nature,? the organization also hires local musicians to perform in the woods during the events.

Traveling around the world in 2011 was an amazing experience for me. I traveled to every country in Eastern Africa, completed roughly 90% of South America, and even went to very unique places that most people don?t travel to like the Guiana?s, Antarctica, Somalia, and the newest country in the world, South Sudan. Some of you have emailed me and have noticed a drop in production and that?s because of my new day trading project where I am teaching people how to day trade.

I plan on getting back on track and this is my dedication to every traveler in the world, 2011 edition. Onward to 2012! I will be posting my 2012 plans very soon!

“My job at Nature Consortium gives me the opportunity to make a significant impact on issues of environmental and racial justice in my community.” – Philip Pantaleo

As a community member of Seattle?s most diverse neighborhood, South Park, I am confronted with the realities of environmental injustice every day. Living a block from the Duwamish river and the superfund site along the river?s banks, I see the impact on my community from not having safe and equal access to the local environment. The soil in South Park was so contaminated with pollutants introduced by local industry that it was not safe to grow food in our front yards. Our water is so dirty and unsafe that we cannot harvest our local river fish for fear of toxin consumption.

Thankfully, through coordination and determination, we in South Park have rallied together to fight to protect our right to utilize a clean and safe natural environment. Environmental justice is a constant battle to ensure that all members of a community have equal and unfettered access to the natural resources around them.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was considered to be the father of environmental justice, as he saw the connection between the environment, working conditions, and the health of the community. His words changed our notions of communal and environmental health. In 1968 before his death, he helped sanitation workers in Memphis rally against unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that disproportionately affected African Americans. Nature Consortium is honoring his legacy by raising awareness of the environmental injustice facing us today.

“The question is not, “If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?” The question is, ‘If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?’ That’s the question.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Duwamish River in Seattle is one of the most polluted rivers in the country. All of Seattle?s superfund sites containing hazardous waste, many of which are along the Duwamish River, are located in the city?s most diverse neighborhoods. This means that communities of color are disproportionately at risk. I believe it is unfair and unjust for a community to bear the burden of environmental degradation as a result of actions by members outside of our community.

My job at Nature Consortium gives me the opportunity to make a significant impact on issues of environmental and racial justice in my community. By ensuring the health of our neighboring forest, we contribute to the health of our neighbors. The plants and soil in the West Duwamish Greenbelt help to filter pollution in the air, noise, and water in the Duwamish corridor. By removing invasive species and replanting the forest, we hope to strengthen this vital natural resource. We know our health is connected to our environment; we are confronted daily by this reality. That is why we work together; that is why we work toward progress; that is why we work to ensure environmental justice for all in our community.

Today, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we dedicate our work toward making Dr. King?s dream a reality.

This is a sponsored post from Vonage Mobile App

When it comes to talking to friends and family overseas, most people now rely on Skype.

Thank goodness technology has evolved so we no longer have to rely on phone cards and postcards, like I had to do when I first started travelling.

Free texting is needed for bloggers Photo http://bloggeratlarge.com

We now have text, and facebook, and free international mobile calls and texting.

Vonage Mobile is the latest player in the game with the launch of their new ipone and android app to help make communication easier when you are travelling.

The new Vonage App is helping us to move forward into a world where calling plans are no longer needed, just unlimited data. I like the idea of that? a lot. (Just remember that any calls you make from the app will use data time)

Like Skype, you can talk and text to other users of the Vonage app for free and, if calling direct to a landline or phone, their rates for international calling average 70% less than major mobile carriers and 30% less than Skype.

Billing is also more convenient, with payment integrated directly into your iTunes or Android Market account, instead of maintaining billing in a separate login.

Unlike Sype for iphone and android, Vonage Moblie integrates your existing address book- which means free app-to-app calls and text messages are available without needing to reconnect with people.

This makes it pretty powerful. With Skype you have to go searching for your friends individually, with Vonage Mobile you can multi-invite everyone from your contact list with one simple text.

The Vonage Mobile App is making smartphones smart.

You can call direct from Vonage Mobile to virtually any phone number on the planet. You can dial internationally without needing to activate special services with your mobile carrier.

And most importantly, you can do this with the address book on your phone and your existing mobile number.

Hmm?sounds pretty good.

I bet, like me, you are thinking about the call quality. The thoughts of tin can conversations, echos and drop outs are haunting you. Vonage assures the consumer that they can deliver ?high-def? voice quality, which is much better than a standard cell phone call.

Vonage is currently offering free calls from virtually anywhere in the world to the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.

There are a few circumstances where free calling may not work, like business calls, premium and special service numbers, and satellite phones, but for the most part, free really means free.

You also need to stay under 3000 minutes per month, but I really suggest that you don?t talk that much anyway. Think of your ears!

To see a demo of the app, go check out the ?Magic of Vonage Mobile? video on YouTube at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaRcnY1xZxM

I am excited to check out the new App myself, especially considering the high cost of mobile phone calls here in Australia.

Click to download the Vonage Mobile App

What are your thoughts on the new Vonage mobile App?

If you?re escaping the cold and heading to Miami this month, be sure to plan a visit to the four-day South Beach Wine and Food Festival which is taking place from 23 ? 26 February. Celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, the event takes place right on the beach, where visitors can join a host of celebrity chefs for a packed weekend of tastings, demonstrations, dinners and parties.

One of the many glamorous parties at last year’s festival

Undoubtedly the most glamorous event in the gastronomic calendar, it?s also one of the biggest with more than 55,000 visitors last year. The festival showcases the talents and produce of some of the world?s most renowned chefs, vineyards and distilleries and attracts many A-list guests ? this year film star Antonio Banderas will be presenting his Spanish winery.

Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village at South Beach Food and Wine Festival

Some of this year?s highlights include Brunch at Sea, where you?ll be able to board the festival?s very own party boat, the Biscayne Lady, for a floating brunch of chef Douglas Rodriguez?s zingy Cuban cuisine alongside Food Network star Aaron Sanchez?s Mexican-inspired fare, served with Diplomatico Rum and Montecristo cigars. Learn how to Taste Wine Like a Master Sommelier with various experts who will help you learn how to identify different varietals and styles of wine.

Dining in the Dark is designed to heighten your sense of smell, touch and taste, and after you?ve been led to your table at the dimly-lit ballroom of the Gansevoort Hotel, the lights will go out and won?t come back on until the very end of your four-course meal. All of the evening?s chefs will work together to challenge your palate and test your senses and there?ll be an opportunity to discuss each chef?s dish and wine pairings at the end of the night.

Amstel Light Burger Bash © South Beach Wine and Food Festival

At the Amstel Light Burger Bash, some of the world?s top chefs will compete to prepare the ultimate gourmet burger. Last year the coveted People?s Choice prize was won by Food Network star Michael Symon, who cooked up a burger with fried salami, provolone, shasha hot sauce and pickled onion. Swine & Wine is an event for the pork-obsessed where more than a dozen chefs will work together to produce a roast of unparalleled proportions at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.

Anthony Bourdain will be hosting the festival?s annual Tribute Dinner in honour of Chicago chef Charlie Trotter and renowned winemaker Piero Antinori, with a ?who?s who? of chefs preparing the meal. Finally, Trucks on the Beach is the festival?s official closing party, hosted by the Travel Channel?s Andrew Zimmern who will help visitors navigate the crazy world of Miami?s top food trucks and celebrate the original dishes and classic cocktails that make up the street food scene.

After an amazing time at Up Helly Aa ? from the parades and bar singalongs to the festival of fire to the epic all-night party, it was time to head back to mainland Scotland with our Haggis Adventures crew.

We finished our Up Helly Aa experience with a final hazy day in Shetland, exploring the northern part of the islands, images of which you can see here. I actually made it through all day following the all-night party without so much as a nap ? I passed out on the ferry at around 9:00 PM and slept like a log until we docked at 7:00 AM.

With a full day left on our tour, we had time to check out the sites of Scotland?s east coast, from Aberdeen to Edinburgh.

Stop #1: Stonehaven

Stonehaven, at first glance, was a pretty but ordinary seaside town. It was nice. Nice is good.

And then we came to Dunnottar Castle.

Dunnottar Castle will take your breath away. It?s that spectacular. Even captioning it is an insult, as I can?t possibly bring words that will describe its beauty.

Just go. If you?re in Scotland and you want to get pictures that you will treasure for the rest of your life, go to Dunnottar Castle.

Scotland forever!

Stop #2: Arbroath

This was a new addition to the tour, Tony told us. Each year, he and Dougie try to do something new and different on the Up Helly Aa tour to jazz things up.

And so we stopped in the town of Arbroath for smokies ? freshly smoked fish. We each bought our own, costing less than two pounds for a whole fish. It had been gutted, but we had to pull out the spine on our own.

Now, stopping for fish at 11:00 AM may not seem like the most appetizing idea, but DAMN. That may have been the best fish I?ve ever eaten ? so fresh, so smokey, so succulent. I devoured mine in a flash, as did nearly everyone on the tour.

Very good stop, guys.

Stop #3: St. Andrews

St. Andrews is most famous for golf: it?s where the sport was invented, it?s a major stop on the European PGA golf circuit, and it?s filled with public golf courses along with the more famous private ones.

But for me, it?s famous for two things:

1) St. Andrews is the city where William and Kate fell in love while attending university.

2) St. Andrews is home to the CHARIOTS OF FIRE BEACH!

We ran across the beach, sometimes in slow-motion, while singing the iconic musical score at the top of our lungs. (And yes, Beth, Lisa and Alexa, I did fight in slow-motion as well! Yeah, they had no idea what I was doing.)

St. Andrews is a college town at heart. It?s small and very pretty ? a lovely place to visit on a day trip from Edinburgh.

And strangely, I kept seeing buildings that reminded me of my own alma mater, Fairfield University!

I don?t think I ever mentioned in my posts that Tony and Tom aren?t usually rocking the full beards ? they spent months growing them out for Up Helly Aa. (That?s dedication.) So, naturally, while we were in St. Andrews, they decided to ceremoniously shave them into 70s porn star moustaches.

We found them in front of the bus, dancing to YMCA.

I laughed until I was on the verge of collapse. God, I love these guys.

Back to Edinburgh

Our tour concluded emotionally in the city where it began ? Edinburgh. We couldn?t bear to say goodbye to each other, so we vowed to have one special final night out together. And by special, I mean a pint and a pizza for five pounds. THAT special.

As always, a trip can be measured in the quality of the company. This trip was fantastic ? a perfectly executed voyage to remote and gorgeous Shetland, the best (and strangest) festival I?ve had the privilege of attending, and so many fun activities in between. But the awesome people brought it to the next level.

I?ve raved like crazy about Haggis Adventures, and they deserve it ? they?re a great company, and I can?t wait to travel with them again. I definitely want to go on one of Tony?s tours of the western isles, and I just might be on their Up Helly Aa trip next year as well!

In short ? an amazing time, an amazing adventure, and five days I?ll never forget.

Many thanks to Haggis Adventures for a truly fantastic time on the Up Helly Aa trip. All opinions, as always, are my own.

By Mark Chesnut

More than ever before, Cancun is known as a hot spot for all inclusive resorts that make planning a Mexico vacation easy. But at Oasis Hotels & Resorts, ?all inclusive? can also be perfectly tailored to fit business meetings and special events.

With five different hotels in Cancun?s hotel zone, Oasis Hotels and Resorts offers a variety of choices for groups. Set among 32 beautifully landscaped acres, the Grand Oasis Cancun and Oasis Cancun are among the company?s best options for groups. Both resorts share the same grounds, and combined they have more than 1,700 guest rooms. Groups can plan special events and dinners at any of 17 restaurants and 15 bars, indulge at the spa and multiple swimming pools or try their skills at the tennis courts and nine-hole golf course. Impressive live entertainment is featured nightly; among the best is the Birdmen of Oasis Cancun, a spectacular, Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatic performance that fills the main hotel atrium.

At the recently renamed Oasis Sens (formerly the Sens del Mar), a beautiful 388-room property that caters to adults, guests can toast at the new Sunset Bar, which offers among the best views of the sun setting over Nichupte lagoon. Five restaurants and eight bars provide interesting settings for a variety of events.

Groups traveling with children should consider the Grand Oasis Palm and Oasis Palm, two adjacent properties that are decidedly family-friendly, with an extensive children?s program that allows the kids to be entertained while the grown-ups are conducting business. The conference center can host up to 400 people in the Grand Salon, while four additional breakout rooms provide additional meeting space.

All of the Oasis properties can offer custom-designed menus and themed parties, and ? perhaps most importantly ? whichever property a group chooses, the gorgeous sand and Caribbean Sea are never more than a few steps away.

Did you know that February and March are the peak months for whale watching in Hawaii? Although they call Hawaii home from December to early May, humpback whales are most visible around Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island during this time of year as they breed and give birth to new calves. Native Hawaiians, who call humpback whales ?kohola,? consider the whales as native born, or kamaaina, guardians of their islands, making this an particularly special time to visit. Here?s how to best incorporate these friendly visitors into your Hawaii travel plans:

See Them From the Open Sea

The best way to see humpback whales in Hawaii is to get up close in their natural habitat ? the ocean! Take the Makani Catamaran Sail Cruise along the Pacific shores of Oahu, and you?ll be as close as you can get to these magnificent creatures ? a little over 100 yards away, to be exact. On the Makani Catamaran, you?ll be able to watch the whales play and spout at this safe distance while enjoying the yacht?s full bar, covered cabin seating area, and even a stereo surround-sound system. The cruise ? offered as either a breakfast sail or an afternoon sail ? is family friendly and a reasonable two hours long, giving you enough time to grab some snapshots of both the whales you came to see and other Hawaiian marine life, such as dolphins and flying fish.

See Them From the Land

The humpback whales who visit Oahu are also visible from the island?s shores, particularly the southeastern point of Hanauma Bay. If you want to get in the water (but don?t want to get as close as the Makani Catamaran), you can Snorkel in Hanauma Bay with Kaimana Tours, LLC. Every once in a while, in-between your explorations of the Bay?s vibrant coral reef or its 450+ species of tropical fish, glance up out of the water and sneak a peek of the humpback whales in the background.

For even more vantage points, consider biking to the Diamond Head State Monument in Oahu and hiking up its slopes for some panoramic views of Oahu beaches. You can rent a bike or moped from Hawaiian Styles Rentals, included in the Go Oahu Card. From these heights, you?ll stay dry and still get the same experience of the humpback whale migration in Oahu, Hawaii.

As a travel agent for Totem Travel part of my passion for travelling is that it appeals to my needs to explore and do things I have never done. On my recent vacation to Maui, I decided to visit the Island of Lanai. Lanai ? At 18 miles wide and 13 miles long, Lanai is the most secluded island in the Hawaiian island chain. In my opinion, the best way to sample the island of Lanai is by taking a catamaran over with Trilogy Excursions 808-874-5649; http://www.sailtrilogy.com)

When you check in at the harbor, you can see the crew getting the catamaran ready for your adventure. We were greeted by Captain Chuck and invited to start boarding. On board they invited us to stow our bags and head up top for the best views. Once we were all settled and accounted for we started out for Lanai. The water was a deep azul almost black in some places. Lanai was off in the distance with some low laying fog visible from our seats. The crew on my trip was Nick and his brother Dominic and a wonderful young lady named Alex. After a few minutes a mouth watering smell of hot cinnamon rolls made its way up from the galley. While the cinnamon rolls were being served, Captain Chuck talked about the island and what the itinerary was for the day. Through out the ride over, the crew served us juice and kept us well fed with fresh fruit and later on delicious wraps. Along the way we stopped to view the amazing spinner dolphins as they showed off their fins in the water and their fabulous dance moves as they dipped and dived in and out of the water. They were graceful as well as playful as they sped along in front of us.

Once we arrived in Lanai, we had the option of going straight to the beach or doing a local tour that took us into Lanai City. I decided to hop on the city tour. We had a fabulous local guide by the name of Moana who had live on and off Lanai for most of her life. She had fabulous knowledge of the history of the pineapple plantations and the growth of Lanai through the years.

While driving from the harbor to the town of Lanai City, it is hard to believe that you are on the same island. The landscape changes from tropical beach to wild west prairies on the drive to Lanai City. We went from approximately 95 degrees on the beach to 75 and afternoon showers in town. Images in my head are of hot desert sand under my toes and cool green Cook Island pines (planted to collect moisture) in the fog because water is scarce on the island.

Lanai?s central town ? for a wonderful array of shops, restaurants and local businesses all centered around Dole Park. Depending on what you?re in the mood for, you can grab a cup of coffee from Coffee Works, dine like a local at the Blue Ginger Café, or enjoy other delicious fare at Canoes, Café 565 or Pele?s Other Garden.

After the tour we headed out to the beach to snorkel, snuba or just relax in the sun. Manele bay and Hulopoe Bay (recently named America?s best beach) are simple breath taking. Because they are protected by a reef they are great for snorkeling and swimming. The crew of Trilogy I had the snorkeling equipment set up and ready to go. My first two attempts at snorkeling were not very successful. So as I bravely asked for my size 8 snorkel fins they asked why I was so nervous. I said well I feel like I am suffocating. Alex offered to go out with me on a surf board and help me learn how to breathe using the mask so I could successfully snorkel. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated her patience and encouragement. She was fantastic! You could tell she loves her job. She paddled out with me and slowly walked me through how to fit my mask, how to use the breathing apparatus and gave me little tips like don?t smile under water otherwise water will get into your mask. I couldn?t help but smile! So naturally water got into my mask. She made my first successful experience snorkeling fun and safe! After time on the beach we head back toward the marina where they had a barbeque set up for us. The lunch was sumptuous with BBQ chicken, Chinese stir fry noodles with corn on the cob and a yummy dessert.

After a leisurely lunch, we all head back on board Trilogy I and sailed back to Lahaina with an amazing sunset for a backdrop and rainbows welcoming us in the clouds over Maui.

I loved my experience and I will be back to sail Trilogy again and visit the enticing island of Lanai. If you would like more information about visiting the island of Lanai or would like more information about booking a trip to Maui, please feel free to give me a call at 425-821-4100 or send me an email jill@totemtravel.com.
