In December, Jungle Island celebrated its 75th anniversary, making it one the oldest and most established attractions in the area. However, much has changed in Jungle Island?s 75-year history (including its name!), and today, what used to be a small habitat for exotic birds is a vibrant contemporary theme park featuring rare animals of all kinds.

Jungle Island?s current location on Miami?s Watson Island combines the best of Miami?s beautiful tropical landscape and extraordinary animals from around the globe. Check out some of the park?s most loved animals, special offers, and upcoming events.

Our Favorite Animals

  • Vulcan, The Liger

Vulcan, the rare and enormous liger.

This rare breed is an offspring of the male lion and female tiger, exhibiting traits of both species. The liger is the largest cat in the world?Vulcan stands at over 11 feet tall and weighs more than 900 pounds.

  • The Albino Alligators
Albinism in alligators is extremely rare, as without the dark pigments in their hide, they have no means to camouflage and rarely survive in the wild. Albino alligators also burn easily from the pigments of the sun, yet they need Vitamin D3 to survive. In captivity, albino alligators can be given dietary supplements to help with this.
  • The Leopards
The leopards are the newest addition to jungle island, added in 2011. Leopards are the smallest of the panther genus and are known for their agile hunting and tree-climbing skills.  Although leopards usually have spots, Jungle Island is also home to a black leopard, sometimes referred to as a black panther.
  • Peanut & Pumpkin, Twin Orangutans

The cutest twins you ever did see: Peanut & Pumpkin

Orangutans are considered the most endangered of all the Big Apes because their habitat (two islands in Indonesia) is vanishing at an alarming rate.  Jungle Island is the proud home of Peanut and Pumpkin, a pair of female twin orangutans?an extreme rarity in the wild and in captivity. In December, the twins celebrated their 9th birthday.

  • Mama Cass, the Doubled Wattled-Cassowary
Doubled-wattled cassowaries are large, flightless, fruit-eating birds native to the forests of New Guinea and northern Australia. They have been named the world?s most dangerous bird by The Guinness Book of World Records because they often violently attack humans who intrude upon their territory. However, Mama Cass, Jungle Island?s own cassowary is the only bird of its kind to be trained and in show anywhere in the world.
